Setor 4 – 21,5km
Before leaving Álamo, to the left and covered by vegetation, lie the historical remains of a Roman Dam. To the right, there remains an old wheel well alongside a stone bench, which provides some rest.
We once again gain our balance and leave the locality of Álamo following a path with sure footing upon stone and between walls, passing through another cultivated meadow, until we reach the fishing village of Guerreiros do Rio. Here we find a kiosk with refreshments, snacks and a picnic park, where we can see the pier. Just ahead, the iconic Guerreiros do Rio Museum has miniature replicas of 30 traditional Guadiana boats, and where traditional fishing arts are highlighted. Back on the path, and after another panoramic view over the river, we arrive at the next locality on the riverside: Laranjeiras.
Again we find a kiosk, a pier and the traditional restaurant “Cantarinha do Guadiana”, famous for its delicious game dishes and fish from the river.
The walk continues towards Montinho das Laranjeiras [Little Orange Grove Hill], where on the right, we find an archaeological site with traces of three distinct historical periods (Roman, Visigoth and Islamic).
Now it’s time to climb, the path is steep, but it has a privileged view over the Guadiana. At the end of the climb, the GR15 runs into the PR 2 “Ladeiras do Pontal”.
The path approaches the river again, providing more direct contact with nature, marked by the presence of centuries-old olive trees.
We arrive at the Pontal do Guadiana Viewpoint, a mandatory stop and emblematic locale for the fantastic view over the river and towards Spain, moreover, it serves as a picnic park. Here, the GR15 separates itself from the PR 2 “Ladeira do Pontal”, taking different paths.
After some rest and the magnificent view, we follow the narrow path, surrounded by holm oaks and diverse vegetation, and then cross the ravine where we find a wheel well. The route now runs parallel to the river and climbs toward the village of Marmeleiro. We are confronted by stone walls which, in ancient times, created the division between properties.
We can observe an old clothes laundering area and what remains, from what is believed to be, an ancient Roman stone path (Eastern Algarve Road Axis) that links Tavira to Alcoutim, passing through Castro Marim. Continue the walk through the pine forest underbrush until reaching the Alcoutim Dam. Here the way down winds between hills and valleys until reaching the Alcoutim Riverside Beach. This beach, with facilities and a picnic area, is one of the most renowned in the Algarve countryside and it connects to the Cadavais Stream. Leaving the river beach we enter the village of Alcoutim where we find the famous azulejos panels, one of the traditional arts in the municipality.
There is a convergence here with the GR 13 – Via Algarviana (Great Route that crosses the Algarve from east to west through 13 municipalities).
Here we can find restaurants, accommodations, pharmacy, crafts and culture. We recommend Castelo Novo and its museum centre, the mother church and a visit to the Casa dos Condes (Alcoutim Cultural Museum and Library). The stage ends, for now…
At the end of this section, we can go towards the GR114, crossing from Alcoutim to Sanlucar.
