Setor 5 – 11,4km
Let’s take the old Tax Office path that once held guard and confronted smuggling by intersecting some old watchtowers, which have now been reconverted. The view is towards Spain, towards the Puerto de la Laja [Flagstone Port], where in the golden age, boats were loaded with ore. At this point we reach the Monte Vascão until descending to the stream with the same name. We have reached the area that demarcates the Algarve and Alentejo regions, we cross the border between the municipalities of Alcoutim and Mértola, respectively.
We arrive at the Vascão stream and finish the 78.5 km that comprise the Algarve section in the Multistage Route of Guadiana.
If you are adventurous, use your legs and let’s get on the path to Mértola. Have a good trip and come back!
As some of the GR15 route inside Alentejo territory is not implemented and duly marked, the GR15 ends next to the Vascão Stream. In this direction, before moving on to Sector 5, you have to retrace your steps by the use of ride-sharing services or by taxi (suggestion: FunRiver – Alcoutim, Tel. +351 926 682 605 E-mail: [email protected]
To make your return easier, we suggest that you adopt the town of Vascão as a meeting point (2 km away from the stream).
During times of full and rising tides, we do not advise crossing the Vascão Stream.
Return to before Alcoutim and if you want to continue on the GR15 to Mértola, cross the river (the FunRiver company) and in Sanlúcar de Guadiana, follow the GR114 towards Pomarão to resume the GR15 route there.
Before leaving towards the north, you can choose to go on the GR114, crossing from Alcoutim to Sanlucar.
